Courgettes provide only 17 calories per 100 g and Contain no saturated fats or cholesterol.  They are rich in vitamin A, antioxidant vitamin-C and their peel is good source of dietary fibre. They are also a very good source of potassium, a heart friendly electrolyte which helps reduce blood pressure and heart rates by countering effects of sodium. They are good in B-complex groups of vitamins too like thiamin, pyridoxine, riboflavin and minerals like iron, manganese, phosphorus, zinc and potassium.


Courgettes provide a moderate source of folates and, when taken adequately before pregnancy, can help prevent neural tube defects in the fetus. Furthermore the golden skin varieties are rich in antioxidants such as carotenes, lutein and zeaxanthin. These compounds help scavenge harmful oxygen-derived free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) from the body that play a role in aging and various disease processes.
